Empathy in Action

During our Giving Back intersession, students completed 10 of the 20 community service hours required for 8th grade promotion. Through hands-on experiences with local Tucson organizations, students explored what it truly means to support their community while practicing empathy and perspective-taking. One power partnership was with Pima Animal Care Center (PACC), where students participated in the Paws and Pages program. They spent their day reading to shelter dogs to help calm and socialize them. As students sat beside the animals, they reflected on the environment the dogs are in and the hope each dog experiences daily while waiting to be adopted. The experience was both heartwarming and humbling, reminding students that small acts of kindness can make a last impact.

Learning to Thrive with the Land

During our Thrive Outside fall intersession, students explored survival skills designed for real life in the Sonoran landscape. With guidance and partnership with the Arizona Trail Association, they learned how to hike and camp safely, find direction, and appreciate the delicate balance of our desert ecosystem. Beyond practical skills, students developed a deeper respect for nature and the many species we share it with. Throughout the week, students discovered that thriving outside means understanding, protecting, and connecting with the world around us.

Math at PFFSD

Our math classes are built on the belief that learning should be relevant, collaborative, and joyful. Students often tackle project-based, real-world math—like our Phone Usage Project, where they collect and analyze their own screen-time data to uncover patterns and insights. Learning also happens through movement and teamwork: students regularly work in groups, get out of their seats to problem-solve together, and support one another’s growth. Joy is infused into lessons with games like Trashketball, where math practice meets play. These approaches not only build strong math skills but also foster collaboration, creativity, and a love of learning.
